MediPet Pet Insurance: What the Insurer Publishes

How to read this page. Community Vet does not rate insurers and has not tested any insurer's claims. Figures below are taken from the sources named on this page on the date shown. Insurers change plans, prices and rules, so confirm everything with the insurer, in writing, before you pay.

What MediPet publishes
- Waiting periods: all plans except Accident have a 30-day no-claim period. Listed accidents are covered immediately if the pet is seen by a vet within 48 hours. Essential and Ultimate360 have a 6-month wait for knee and hip, elbow and shoulder, eye, respiratory and spinal treatment. Ultimate360 has a 4-month wait for prescription food, dental care and sterilisation.
- Pre-existing conditions: generally excluded. LitePlus is described as designed to cover them, but the plan page does not give the detailed rules, so ask. The Benefit Booster add-on can cover conditions a plan excludes, including pre-existing ones. MediPet's pages describe its availability inconsistently (all plans in one place, only some plans in another), so confirm before relying on it.
- Joining age: Accident, Lite and LitePlus list no maximum joining age. For Essential and Ultimate360, dogs must be under 9, and dogs aged 8 to 9 and cats aged 9 and over need a full vet history.
- Claims: MediPet says it aims to process claims in an average of 7 to 10 working days, and pre-approved payments within 4 working days. Claims must be submitted within 60 days of treatment. Refunds go to you, or to your vet if you arrange that in advance with MediPet and your vet.
- Excess: for example, Lite and LitePlus list 25% of the claim with a minimum of R300. Other plans differ, so check the plan you are quoted.
Questions to ask MediPet
- Which plans can my pet join, given its species, breed and age?
- What is the annual limit, and are there limits per condition or per claim?
- What is the excess, and is it a flat amount or a percentage?
- Which waiting periods apply to illness, hereditary or orthopaedic conditions, and dental treatment?
- How are pre-existing conditions defined, and is anything covered?
- Do I pay the vet and claim back, or can the insurer pay the vet? How long do claims usually take?
- How and when can premiums change, including after a claim?
