MediPet Pet Insurance Review
Rating: 3.5/5 · Starting price: R149/month · Claim turnaround: 5–7 days · Annual limit: R70k · Founded: 1998
Who Is MediPet?
South Africa's longest-running dedicated pet insurer (founded 1998). Well-known to SA vets — many practices handle MediPet claims regularly. Plans from R149/month up to R70,000 annual limit. Biggest differentiator: The LitePlus tier — the only SA pet insurance plan that offers any cover for pre-existing conditions.
The LitePlus Tier — Pre-Existing Condition Cover
Every other SA pet insurer (Oneplan, Dotsure, OUTsurance, PawPaw, Checkers Pet) explicitly excludes pre-existing conditions. MediPet's LitePlus plan is the sole exception.
Important caveats: Not all pre-existing conditions are covered — MediPet assesses each case. Cover level is lower than standard plans. Waiting period applies before pre-existing cover kicks in. Premiums on LitePlus are higher than the standard starting price.
Pros
- Only SA insurer with a pre-existing condition option (LitePlus)
- Established brand — well-known to SA vets since 1998
- R70k annual limit is decent for most conditions
- Add-on options: Routine Care, Chronic Care, Benefit Booster
- 10% multi-pet discount
- Can use any registered SA vet
Cons
- Highest entry price in SA (R149/mo)
- 5–7 day claim turnaround — slower than Dotsure (48h) or Oneplan (same day)
- Administrative errors reported on dental claims
- No direct-to-vet payment — reimbursement only
- No exotic pet cover
- Up to 9 years age limit at signup

Verdict
MediPet is a niche essential rather than an all-rounder. Best for owners of pets with pre-existing conditions (LitePlus tier). For everyone else, higher entry price and slower claims make it harder to recommend over Dotsure or Oneplan, unless you value the longest-running SA provider.
