Pet insurance is not for everyone. It works best for people with high-cost breeds, no savings buffer, or who want peace of mind. If you have a healthy mixed-breed dog and R15 000 in accessible savings, you may be absolutely fine without it.
How pet insurance works in SA
You pay a monthly premium. Your pet is covered for accidents and/or illness up to an annual limit. In most cases, you pay the vet first and claim the money back afterwards. Oneplan is an exception — they can pay some vets directly.
- Waiting periods apply. Usually 30 days for illness claims. You cannot sign up today and claim for something that happened yesterday.
- Age limits exist. Most insurers will not cover a pet older than 10 years at signup.
- Pre-existing conditions are almost never covered. If your dog already has hip dysplasia when you sign up, that condition will be excluded.
- There is usually an excess. You may need to pay the first R200 – R500 of each claim yourself.
The main pet insurers in South Africa
Oneplan — known for direct payment to many vets, multiple plan tiers, widely recommended by practices.
Dotsure — eight plan options, covers dogs, cats and some exotic pets, from R99/month, multi-pet discounts.
Petsure — underwritten by Hollard, one of the older SA pet insurance products.
MediPet — hospital cash plan model, simpler product.

Questions to ask before you buy
- Does this policy cover my breed's known health conditions?
- What is the annual claim limit — and is it per condition or overall?
- How much is the excess per claim?
- Does the insurer pay the vet directly, or do I pay and claim back?
- What is explicitly excluded? Read the policy document, not just the marketing page.
- Can I use any vet in South Africa?
If you cannot afford pet insurance
We will never pretend insurance is the only answer. If the monthly premium is genuinely beyond your budget:
- Use SAVA Community Veterinary Clinics for primary care at heavily subsidised rates. Find a clinic →
- Contact your local SPCA — many run low-cost clinics.
- Start a small emergency fund. Even R100/month adds up.
- Ask your vet about a payment plan before treatment begins.
