Pet Insurance Claim Speed Comparison

When your pet needs expensive treatment, claim speed matters. Here's how each SA insurer performs on claim turnaround — both what they advertise and what real users report.

Advertised vs Real Claim Times

What "Claim Speed" Actually Means

There are two stages to every claim:

  1. Pre-authorisation (before treatment): How fast the insurer approves a planned procedure. Dotsure and OUTsurance are fastest here. Oneplan pre-auths are generally smooth, but back-end payment can be slow.
  2. Reimbursement (after treatment): How fast the money lands in your account. This is where MediPet's advertised "24 hours" falls short — real users report 5-7 days.

The Dotsure Difference

Dotsure consistently delivers on their 48-hour turnaround. Multiple Hellopeter reviews confirm claims paid within 48 hours. They've reimbursed R400M+ since 2020. This reliability is their strongest feature for owners who need fast reimbursement.

Why Oneplan's Speed Is Inconsistent

Oneplan's pre-authorisation and Onecard loading is fast — same day in many cases. But the back-end processing after the vet is paid has been problematic in early 2026. Multiple complaints on Hellopeter (March–April 2026) describe a pattern: pre-auth granted, vet paid via Onecard, then weeks of delays in settling the claim. This leaves the owner chasing Oneplan while the vet has already been paid.

If claim speed matters most to you: Dotsure is the most consistently fast (48h). OUTsurance is also reliable (1-3 days). Oneplan is fast on paper but has shown inconsistencies. MediPet advertises fastest but delivers slowest.
